Bicycle sales outpaced car and truck sales in 2006. Good news.

Broken arm

January 4, 2007 4 comments

Adelaide broke her arm last night. She was messing around in the family room on one of the bean bag cushions and fell backward awkwardly. When she put her hand out behind her to stop falling she started screaming.

We iced her arm, thinking it was a sprained wrist, but after 20 minutes it wasn’t really helping much so we took her to the hospital. They put a splint on it to keep it still overnight and asked that we go down for an X-Ray first thing. We did that, and a few hours later we had a referral to an orthopedic surgeon at Ballarat to examine the break.

They took more X-Rays there, and when they clearly identified the break and the fact that the bone wasn’t in alignment any more they booked her in for GAMP surgery. GAMP apparently means General Anaesthetic, Manipulation and Plaster. She went into the theatre at about 4pm and was out less than an hour later with her arm in a plaster cast from thumb to bicep. The bone is nice and straight, and they’ve said she’ll recover just fine. I suspect she’ll find it gets a little sore over the next day or two, but it won’t be long before the cast has writing all over it so it will become a badge of honor rather than a problem.

Not the best 18 hours in our life, but the outcome looks like it’s going to be 100% fine. Many thanks to the staff of both Maryborough and Ballarat hospitals. You all did a wonderful job, and our little girl is all back together again.
