I’ve had a bit of a read through The Gentleman’s Magazine that I found earlier, and it’s interesting stuff.

Take a look at this snippet:

That’s for May/June 1860 in the Districts of London. A huge number of deaths for people under the age of 20.

imageLove this passage from an obituary for a gentleman named C. Scarisbrick. A bounder and a cad, no doubt.

    Wow. That is a massive number of deaths amongst the youngsters. Not sure what the number one cause of death was at the time but I’m guessing it was water/foodborne diseases given the living conditions back then. Young kids would have been most at risk. Over 80s would also have been at risk but not many in the population would actually have reached that age thus the low death rate.

    Makes you really wonder what things were like back then.

    I love the terminology ‘contracted an alliance’ :)
