Computing the volume of a cat
How do you compute the volume of a cat?
Dunking it in water doesn’t work– you only get the volume of the rat-like creature that lives inside the cat…

The IT department at work are part way through an IP renumbering exercise and found a server they didn’t know about. They asked us who owned it.
A few people had suggestions, but the best one came from Slava, our resident Russian solution architect:
Turn off. Owner head will pop up. If no head pop up, server not used.
Walked from my lodgings in The North Wing to the local Safeway & back. Fetched stuff for lunch over the next few days. Gone 52 minutes; 22:30 down, and 21:50 back.
After working exclusively in C# and WinForms for the last 18+ months I’ve had to go back and maintain some code written in C++ using MFC.
Oh. My. God. How did I ever survive this in the past? It’s totally ghastly. Let me write out ten times…
I will never use C++ and MFC for GUI work ever again.

The Kid and I are back from Melbourne. She had a few days with her grandparents on holiday, and I worked. Took the D80 down and took some photos. I especially like this one.
In related kid news, New Kid On the Block is now 57cm long; she’s grown 6cm in just under 6 weeks. Her weight is up to 10lb 10oz, which is just under 2lb over her birth weight.
I’ll be down again next week, and it will be a week of flat out work. Very busy.
We had a bonfire today. We had a bit of junk that we would otherwise have taken to the tip, but everyone around us has been burning off their junk over the last month or two,
so we figured we’d join in. I had cleaned out the office a month ago and had a bunch of boxes of junk to go to the tip, and we had a couple of trees that died in the drought, so they came down with the chainsaw to join in the fun. Lisa also cleaned out the pantry and we burnt that too (the stuff she cleaned out; not the pantry). I would have to admit that was a slight mistake because there were a few cans of food that exploded with a very definite ‘BOOM’ that had neighbors looking out of their windows. Given the number of loads of Lisa’s washing that they’ve ruined over the past few weeks my guilt factor is pretty close to zero. Seeing tins popping into the air and throwing superheated apricots at the fence was actually pretty funny.
Who said what?
