Lightroom rudeness

September 12, 2007 1 comment

_DSC5867Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has become critical to my photography since I got the D80. It does so much stuff so well it’s indispensable. One thing it does, however, infuriates me. It steals focus. All the time. Any time it’s doing something (and sometimes when it’s idle) window focus is all screwed up. You cannot import photos in the background; every time Lightroom pulls in another photo it forces itself back into the foreground to show you the new photo. I don’t care. Just import the damn things; I’ll come back to you in a few minutes — I promise. Even when it’s running and is idle I’ll often Alt-Tab to another window only to have Lightroom still be focus window; I have to minimize Lightroom to get other windows to focus properly. End of rant.

Still sick

September 12, 2007 1 comment

I blogged a couple of days ago that I had a bug over the weekend but I was getting better. WRONG. I’ve actually gone downhill over the last few days. I feel better today than I did yesterday, but I’m still feeling pretty dreadful.

D80 battery life

September 12, 2007 Comments off

One of the things I really like about the D80 versus the S2 IS is the battery life. Right now it’s showing 49% charged with 596 pictures since the last charge. That’s close to 1200 pictures per charge… nice. That’s a healthy mix of indoor flash shots and outdoor shots, so it isn’t like I’ve actually worked to get life out of this charge.

Nothing to say

September 10, 2007 Comments off

DSC_5324I haven’t had much to blog about lately. It’s just been work and illness. Lisa and The Kid have been laid low by a bug for the last 10 days, and I picked something up late last week too. For a while there we thought about putting a big black cross on the front door warning about the plague. We’re all getting better though; The Kid will be back to school today, and although I’ll probably take the day off to help my recovery I’m getting a lot better too. The Baby is a bit snuffly, but she’s still as happy and content as always, and seems to have sailed through pretty well.

It isn’t there yet

September 4, 2007 1 comment

imageI need to travel from home to visit someone I occasionally see in Melbourne. Any time I’ve visited them in the last 18 months I’ve already been down in town, so I figured I’d sanity check the route I’d take directly from up here.

The always excellent Google Maps to the rescue, of course. It made a mistake, however. This fragment of the suggestion won’t work for me because the road it selected doesn’t exist.

Where it shows you can bypass Malmsbury, Taradale and Elphinstone is wrong. You have to stay on the Calder Highway because that section of the freeway is still under construction. It’s well underway, and it’s scheduled to open within the next 12 months, but it isn’t there yet.
