Minor discovery
This afternoon I dug out my old “Achiever multi-dedicated TZ250” flash head. I got this for the Ricoh KR-10 Super that I was given for my 21st birthday. It turns out that this flash head kind of works on the D80.
I say “kind of” because two things aren’t right. However, it’s close enough that it will work for now. First, it doesn’t meter properly. It was probably a big ask to get TTL metering working on a 20 year old flash head, but that’s no big deal — I’ll just shoot manually. The second thing is that the D80 tries to pop up the built-in flash when required. Again, shooting manually gets around this. This second issue may well be solved by me reading the D80 manual a little more closely.
It’s far from perfect, and there’s no doubt a proper Nikon speedlight would be much better, but this cost me $0.00 plus 4 AA batteries, so it’s much cheaper.
The photo above was taken with Eloise in the mountain buggy. I bounced the flash off the ceiling above her. ISO 100, 135mm, 1/60 @ f/5.6.
It’s now time to start playing a few strobist tricks and make some cheap bounce surfaces.
Who said what?
