My D80 has died

December 30, 2009

nikon-d80-drive-450 Over the last few weeks I’ve had an occasional error message displayed on the top LCD of my D80. It’s been getting more and more frequent and it’s now reached the point where it’s there the whole time. The shutter fires but it doesn’t capture any images. It’s dead.

I’ll take it into a Nikon service centre as soon as I can but it probably means I’m out of action with respect to photography for the next few weeks.

When I first started getting this error I feared it was actually the shutter that was failing. In the D80 the shutter mechanism is rated for ~50K exposures, and I’m up around ~38K. The more I read about this error though the more I’m convinced it’s an electronics problem.

    any news on your camera?

Not yet. It went into The Camera Clinic about 2 weeks ago and I called up yesterday to see where it’s up to only to be told they’ll get to it next week — and that’s for the inspection and quote. Who knows how long it will take to fix. Not happy, and missing my camera terribly. I’ve probably taken 20 shots with Lisa’s camera during January but that’s it.

I hear that The Camera Clinic in Collingwood is excellent…

That’s the Nikon repair centre I’m planning on taking it to. Good to hear that they’re ok.

My cell phone camera is so bad it isn’t funny. Not worth the trouble.

Sorry to hear that! And right before the 2010 challenge starts… maybe you’ll have to start out with a cell phone camera. :-)
