Velodrome

September 3, 2011 1 comment

Wow, over a month since I’ve posted to my poor neglected blog. Time flies.

Anyway, spring has sprung, and we took a trip to the velodrome with the girls after school a couple of days ago. The velodrome is in beautiful condition at the moment. Really looking forward to using it a lot during the summer.

Velodrome

The girls both took the vehicle of their choice – bike for the big girl, and scooter for the little one.

The scooter was fun for a while, then it was more exciting to climb the embankment.

Eloise

Both had fun.

Scottish Tattoo

January 3, 2011 1 comment

New Year’s day in Maryborough has long been associated with the annual highland gathering. This year was the 150th celebration – and to mark the occasion, the Highland Society decided to hold a Scottish Tattoo.

The tattoo was preceded by a parade down the main road. Because I was behind the wheel of one of the SES rescue trucks I don’t have photos of the parade, but we certainly had fun being part of it. The kids lining the route loved seeing the trucks with flashing lights and blaring sirens.

Tattoo

The tattoo itself was fantastic. It kicked off with the Maryborough brass band playing a few introductions and was followed up by some re-enactment actors who played out a scene depicting the discovery of gold in Maryborough. Regular readers might recognise a few of the actors.

Next up was a ensemble of pipe and drum bands (something like 7 or 8 bands combined) that sounded fantastic. They played for 10 or 15 minutes and the crowd enjoyed every second of it.

Celine

Once the band left, a small stage was setup for Celine Toner, a Celtic singer. Her set of 5 songs were great and left a lasting impression on the girls. Because they shared a changing room with Celine they spent a bit of time with her and her band. We’ve got a personally signed CD and some great memories.

I’m afflicted

Peter, Diane and Terry (an acting friend of Peter’s) played a second set as a snake-oil salesman. They needed an audience plant who would be afflicted by some terrible disease and then miraculously cured. Cue Big Girl:

Marching Girls

No highland event would be complete without marching girls and sword dancing. There were two groups of marching girls – one group called The Originals who was made up of older women who have been marching girls at earlier highland gatherings. They weren’t as mobile as they used to be, but you could tell they were having a great time marching in front of a crowd again.

The Originals

Next up were the modern day marching and sword dancing girls. There were four different groups and they all did pretty well – they were another crowd favourite.

The Windy Kilts

An actor played the role of audience warm up and MC early in the event. Later, he slipped into his role as leader of The Windy Kilts. They were great – very funny stuff. Completely unsophisticated slapstick humour, but I loved every minute of it.

Finale

The event closed with the whole arena filled with the Maryborough brass band, the massed pipe and drum bands, the marching girls and the actors. The bands played a few final songs including Auld Lang Syne (it is New Year, after all) and finished the only way the possible could with Scotland The Brave.

Next year

I’ve been told that if this year’s tattoo was a success they’ll make it a regular part of the new year’s event. I haven’t yet heard whether they’ve made a decision (it’s a little early to know) but given that Princes Park was full of people who loved every minute of what went on, I can’t see how it could be considered anything other than a success.

New playground

December 11, 2010 1 comment

As part the rejuvenation of the station precinct in Maryborough the council have built a wonderful playground. It opened at 4pm yesterday with a pretty big celebration and was absolutely packed.

The kids went to the opening, of course. Big Girl stood right next to the mayor as he cut the ribbon and was one of the first to go in. We went back today so they could have some more fun when it was a little less crowded. I took the camera today as well.

It’s very well designed. The council have spent a six figure sum on building it, and it’s taken the best part of 3 months (there were some delays because of the rain). The whole area has been landscaped really well, and it’s surrounded by fence with a single gate. It includes lots of undercover seating for parents and is definitely the highlight of the whole precinct area. It’s next to a large stage and amphitheatre area that will host performing arts.

Clunes Show

November 21, 2010 Comments off

It’s a very busy time in the district at the moment. Maryborough itself is overrun with thousands of screaming schoolkids for the annual RACV Energy Breakthrough. I spent a few hours at the site yesterday manning the SES PR trailer. Not a whole lot of activity earlier in the day – the one exception was when the pedal powered security team flew past on their way to find the streaker on the oval.

After lunch, Lisa and I took the kids to the Clunes show. We had a great time. I took little one on the dodgem cars while big girl went on the Pee Wee Speedway and spent 10 minutes driving a quadbike around the track. Guess what she wants for Christmas?

Backyard work

September 18, 2010 3 comments

Lisa and I have done a bunch of work in the backyard of the last few months. It’s coming up really well.

Backyard wide shot

The kids have got their gym set, trampoline, sandpit, play house and table & chair set. In the lower left corner is the herb garden I’ve just started. I got a trailer load of rocks, filled the gaps with soil and poked some herbs into different spots. The tub on the paver has got a bay tree. We’ve also got a lemon tree that’s starting to show promise and an apple tree that’s about to flower.

Herb garden

The herb garden has got parsley, oregano, mint, coriander and rosemary in it. Over the next few weeks I’ll be extending it with a few more rocks and putting in some basil and a few other things. We’re also about to start digging some soil over for the vegetable garden. We tried a few years back but just had no water; this year we’ll be ok.

Walking

My back is almost back to normal now, and I’ve been quite mobile today. It hasn’t really given me any trouble at all. I took the kids out for a few hours this afternoon; we went for a walk around the Goldfields Reservoir, rolled over to the playground at Lake Victoria and then finished up with a walk around the lake.

They probably walked 3km all up, plus a good 30 minutes on the playground.

As big girl pointed out, that’s a good thing, because she’ll have no trouble getting to sleep before the Easter bunny arrives tonight with chocolate eggs.

You’d almost think I planned it that way. :-)

There’s a few more photos up on SmugMug; you know where to look.

Lazy summer afternoon

November 14, 2009 Comments off

I know it’s technically not summer yet, but given that we’ve had like a bazillion days over 30 already it sure feels like summer. Days like this are just made for late afternoon barbeques.

While the snags were cooking I grabbed a half decent shot of Adelaide bathed in the dying glow of the sun.

Alex

Our cute little pet sheep is 5 months old tomorrow.

He was born on the 6th of June (6/6/2009) and we got him on the 8th as a two day old lamb that had been rejected by his mother. Lisa, The Kids and I bottle fed him while he lived in the backyard with the dogs. These days he’s out in the paddock with Malcolm and Maverick. The three of them get along brilliantly.

He’s still friendly and happy to come running up to us when we go out to see him. Adelaide has a bit of trouble with him because she used to jump around the back yard with him as a lamb and he still tries to do that – but he’s now big, heavy and has had horns. Adelaide is getting wary of him after he’s butted into her a few times.

Alex

We’re not sure how or why, but he’s lost both his horns. They were only short stubs anyway, but he’s lost them both. One was hanging loose when Lisa went out one morning; she thinks he might have knocked it when leaning through the fence to steal food from the Alpacas. Not sure when the other one went. Either way, it doesn’t seem to bother him in the slightest; he’s still happy grazing with the Alpacas, running around the paddock when we go out there and generally doing all the things Alex does.

The way life should be – lots of space, fresh air, large and safe play areas, and big blue skies. Doesn’t get much better.
